Mondays are hard, but we persevere. We began the day trying our hand at Big Booty, an exercise that develops our sense of rhythm, beat, awareness, readiness and focus - it's amazing how the most seemingly simple tasks require the most profound concentration! Then we took turns with Kelsey working our vocal parts (alto vs. soprano, tenor v. bass, etc.), while Brian walked us through very relaxing posture & breath technique. The afternoon was spent choreographing Oh The Thinks You Can Think. Other miscellaneous fun facts from the day: We met two new campers who missed the first week (Kristi & Mitch), Bye, Bye Birdie contains very annoying music and a ghost moves very similar to a bird. See you tomorrow!

One week down - four to go. Today we added some of the more complex vocal parts to Oh The Thinks You Can Think and ran Green Eggs & Ham until Margaret agreed it was perfect-o! After lunch, we ran some theatre exercises that stressed concentration, rhythm & leaving no actor behind. We finished the day by crafting original, pantomimed circus acts (that just might make it into our final performance!); these included tight rope walkers, a pride of very well trained lions & big top janitors. We are thankful for the weekend, and look forward to starting fresh on Monday. Until then...
Today we...
1) Began learning the music for the opening number, Oh The Thinks You Can Think. 2) Pantomimed. A lot. 3) Created living statues that depicted the story of Seussical in three separate tableaus. 4) Nailed down the music & choreography for the closing number, Green Eggs And Ham. 5) Learned that 'knock knock' jokes don't work on Brian. SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT! As a thank you to all campers & their families for spending their summer with TrueNorth, we are offering them complimentary tickets to any of the upcoming performances of Gershwin On The Air this weekend! Please call the box office at (440) 949-5200 ext 221 to make a reservation! We got our roles today! We started off warming up with an acting exercise. We had to stand in a circle and trade places with someone either through eye contact, pointing and saying "you", or pointing and saying their name. after that, we all got assigned our roles! CAST |
We did a read-through of the script, then after lunch we showed what talents we have for the circus, showing if we could do cartwheels or other feats. We then marched back inside to the cadence of General Genghis Kahn Schmidt, the general from the play. We finished by practicing the Green Eggs and Ham song and dance and got our blocking for the dance. |
See You Tomorrow!
Today we did our auditions! We started off warming up with some Captain on Deck, then went right into it. We started with vocals, singing "Alone in the Universe", then on to dance, where we did our Green Eggs and Ham dance in groups of 4-5, then finished with acting, reading a selection from either "And to Think That I saw it on Mulberry Street", "The Lorax", or "If I Ran The Circus".
After lunch, we did some acting exercises while smaller groups were called for call-backs. We played some Assassin to teach observation, Sound Garden to teach how disparate parts can make a whole, Kitty wants a Corner and Do You Love Your Neighbor to teach nonverbal communication and coordination, and we balanced the space while counting together for coordination and learning how to move past mistakes. Tomorrow's another busy day, so we look forward to working with you then!
See you tomorrow!
Today kicked off the Center Stage camp and we had a strong start! We started off with some warm ups, getting to know each other and sharing what we'd want for our birthday. We played some games with the Cat in the Hat and Giants, Wizards, and Elves.
After lunch, we worked on our audition material, learning some dancing with Margaret, some music with Kelsey, and some acting with Brian. We finished off with a cool game of Captain on Deck and took some pictures and learned our vocal range. Tomorrow we'll start the auditions, so come prepared for that!
