We have PLENTY of work to do before Beauty & the Beast opens on Friday. (Thursday- if you're invited to the dress rehearsal!) The set is not completed. Costumes are 3/4 done. The cast is still learning their scene transitions. The program has a few more proofs to do. And Mr. Alex hasn't pulled ALL of his hair out yet. :) On top of all of that, we still think the students are right on track and we're ready to celebrate their accomplishments. (Whether it's time to celebrate or not!) Our goal was to stretch ourselves to grow as performers, and as people. That's exactly what we did. So to e-celebrate BEFORE we PARTY... here's a sneak peak at Mr. Alex's director's note in the Beauty & the Beast program.... The world of Broadway is so magical in my eyes. The epic lighting, the brilliant acting, the expensive one-of-a-kind costumes, the perfect choreography, and of course the massive sets always ignite the inner child in me. Not only have I grown up watching Beauty & the Beast, but it was also my very first Broadway musical in New York City. The experience was beyond magical. Unlike the version on Broadway, our tiny space doesn’t really allow for those over-sized sets and intricate costumes. As a camp, we stripped the musical of anything you would ever expect to see tonight. We have set tonight’s events in the attic, and, as a camp, we have designed OUR version of the show. The students helped make this vision come to life by designing props, set pieces, scene transitions, and costumes. We hope our concept, although slightly different, is just as magical as the original. This summer’s Center Stage Camp marks my official directorial debut. I have to take the time to thank all of the parents for stepping forward and helping out with the cast party, volunteering for the shows, and shuttling and carpooling students. A special thanks to Rick and the TrueNorth and LCMP family for dealing with 40 students running around for five weeks. To Becky, Carli, Sarah, Anne, Bobby, Chelsea, Jenna, and Nayta: your talents simply amaze me. This show would be impossible without all of your VERY hard work and working with you has brought me joy. I am forever grateful. To the awesome stars of the Center Stage Camp: I have never worked with such a hard working group of campers. I asked you to stretch yourselves and to push yourselves to grow. You have inspired me, fueled me, and taught me more than you know. I am SO proud and impressed! Break some legs. Alex Arroyo
