This week we opened CHILDREN OF EDEN here at TrueNorth. It's written by the same guy that wrote WICKED, PIPPIN, GODSPELL, DISNEY'S POCHAHONTAS, and a bunch of other stuff. It's a brilliant cast to work with and the script and music are magical. I definitely recommend it. (It just feels good to be in a show that has meaning and life lessons in it.)
I play Cain/Japeth. Two very intense and awesome roles! I put Danny Calvert singing one of Cain's songs at the bottom. (He isn't acting... at all... but he sounds great!)
Due to my crazy tech week schedule... work, tech rehearsals, GLEE's opening week (!!), choreographing Lorain City Schools' ALL CITY MUSICAL, etc., I lost my voice on our dress rehearsal! Litterally... gone. It became a constant battle all weekend to simply try to get through the show with a somewhat passable performance. Finally (for the Sunday performance) I was at a pleasant place and was able sing without being a sick mess!
What do you when you lose your voice? I'm sure there are tons of remedies and voodoo potions I could give you but I preferred the classic hot water and honey... and sleep.
What do you do when you lose your voice and you have to perform that second? Act. Let your instincts guide you. Luckily I was confident in WHAT I was singing about. I was able to be proud of my performance because I was still telling a story. It wasn't about what riff I was showing off or what note I was hitting. It was about the words and what action I was playing. It FORCED me to use my acting technique and some say that is a more raw performance. I still like riffs! :)
