Last Friday, we shook up the afternoon with a little Air Band Rock Band!!! Brian played songs that most of us have never heard before and we had to improv based on what we heard...Bass, drums, lead, keys, etc. I won't lie, it was tough- but the kids did great! They came up with some crazy band names too, but their rocker chic looks were the icing on the cake! We had rock band lights, music, costumes....now we just had to make up for the lack of instruments with our improv skills! Obviously, the most glamorous performance was that by the CC (Counselor Cluster) of Maggie, Tricia, Alex, and Jeanette, with special guest rockstar Brian! Monday we started in on costuming- a little fitting, a little craziness, and a lot of crafting (Jeanette's favorite pastime!). We made braided headbands as part of our ape costume! Tuesday we made memory books so we don't forget all the wonderful people in the camp for 2013! Soon, we'll be starting in on our shirts that will make us look like apes! But it's a surprise, so stay tuned! So now it's crunch time, and we are hitting the ground running! Monday we tightened up a lot of our scenes, music, and dances (in our crazy socks, of course!), Tuesday we had a hippie stumble through of Act 1 in our tie dye attire. If our shows are anything like the rehearsal we had Tuesday....Well....THIS SHOW IS GOING TO BE AMAZING.

What a week so far! We've been working and playing hard! Lots of rehearsals, lessons, and games! We even had a gorilla race! Act 1 is blocked and we're starting Act 2! Our big numbers are on their way to perfection and the rest are in the works. Today we brought out the face paints- Our version of TARZAN is going to be more tribal than gorilla- Below are some photos of the finished products! They painted each other! Also, to the right is the "Kids Eye View" of what goes on at camp! These photos were taken by our very own ambitious campers!
Our cast has worked so hard this week! Today Maggie choreographed "Waiting for This Moment" and we reviewed "Son of Man" and"Trashin in the Camp". We made a "machine" as a team and spent time working on our monologues again today! Everyone was so eager to learn and willing to risk, and it made the monologues AWESOME. BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE...We also offered different Master Classes this week for an hour each after camp Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday! Tuesday, Maggie taught us all about BROADWAY CHOREOGRAPHY. We learned different steps and even learned a routine to the title song of "Hair"! Wednesday, we earnestly took notes as Alex told us all about the wonderful world of acting and character development! We've already noticed that things they learned in the classes are being incorporated within their work in the camp, making for ONE AMAZING CAST! Today, Tricia led us in a class about STOMP music and tribal rhythms! We learned "Cups" (made popular by 'Full House' and 'Pitch Perfect' and even got to make some noise with whatever we could find around us to use as instruments! The kids of today's STOMP class are seen below! Different classes are offered every week! Offered multiple days a week, campers can sign up for at least one class to be offered from 3-4pm!
We can't believe it's only been a week since camp began because we've gotten so much done! When we're not rehearsing big musical numbers, we're learning how to be better stewards of the stage through lots of fun exercises and games. Check out some of the pictures below for a better idea of what we're talking about. Have a great Tuesday!
Have a great weekend!
What, you ask, is a Sound Garden? Exactly what it sounds like: a cornucopia of unique utterances and exclamations. Together it sounds like a symphony - greater than the sum of its parts, but when you subtract something, it loses its power. Exercises like these build and strengthen our ensemble, uniting us in a way that both gives us the confidence to try new things as well as depend on the courage of others.
It seems like no one is strangers anymore! Everyone is mixing and participating and having fun!
We've got a cast! Today, after some movement exercises & a tour of the theatre, we had a read-through of the show with our new cast! Here's some of the incredible cast: From left to right; Hannah Floyd (Kala), Katie Stewart (Terk), Alexander Joseph (Kerchak), Cole Rector (Tarzan), Giovanna Layne (Young Tarzan), Ali Yellets (Jane), and Abby Golden (Young Terk).
Spotlight Camp: Superheroes! is over and we are sad and happy at the same time - sad because we'll miss Mister Reese, Micey Dice, and all the awesome superheroes that helped save the day. But we're happy because Center Stage Camp is less than a week away! Tarzan is going to be a blast! Before we move onto our next summer session, however, let's take a fond look back at the incredible performance we put together with the elementary school campers... Have a Happy Fourth of July everybody!
