Thursday, after three days of working with our wise educators, the campers had a chance to showcase all the things that they learned. We had an intense trivia competition between team BOB, team Olive Garden, and team Theatre Llamas that came down to a tie breaker. Mitch eventually led team OG to victory! Then everyone got to sight read and showcase the different compositions they wrote with Lawrence. They were... creative to say the least. And finally they got to stretch/dance out all of their frustration with Mrs. Connie whilst also getting to showcase their wonderful original choreography. Post lunch, the real work began. The rehearsals have been tough this week but the cast has been giving it their all. We tackled two very difficult numbers: "Footloose" and "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" after reviewing some of our music. Today, we started with an amazing lesson on characterization with the legendary Mr. Dana. Then, after a bit of rehearsal and lunch we commenced our character talent show! It was truly entertaining. We got to see Sherlock, Dr. Who, Stitch, Blue and Steve, and so many others. We hope you have a very well deserved weekend. IMPORTANT NOTE: At-home practice will be crucial to the success of putting on this show. Please take time to practice your songs, lines, and choreography before the start of camp on Monday!

DAY 8 Outside the day was cool and gloomy, inside the campers enthusiastically began Day 8 as Mr. Brian gathered the camp for the morning games session which begins each day. Divided into three groups for an elimination game of categories in which Lee defeated Mr. David and Mr. Dana in the final round to win lunch cookies for Group 3. Theatre Exercises continued with group sculptures and tableaux. The theatre intensive sessions which began on Monday finished off as each group worked on the specialized skill class they had not yet attended. Connie led a group dance warm up and class assisted by Ariel which explored deeper stretches, body isolations and moves than time allows during the rehearsal session of learning the show choreography. Lawrence assisted by Kelsey gave a class teaching the rhythmic basics of music which they then used both to create a composition and to invent a system for notating it for the future. JD, helped by Shaun and Dana, used a competitive trivia game to review a history of Musical Theatre and got the campers to discuss various shows, movies and performances and what makes them work and become favorites. The rain and winds held off enough to allow the campers to make their usual split between those who lunch at the outside picnic tables and those who lunch in the classroom.
Brian had new group theatre games to start the afternoon and everyone became group shapes on faster and faster cues. (Elephant, Broccoli, Palm Trees and more) Work on our show rounded out Day 8 with Connie choreographing the principal characters in Time of My Life while Lawrence reviewed the others on all the music learned to date. After that the prom number was integrated by the two groups after which Brian dismissed camp for the day. Today, we had the time of our lives at camp! We started the day with some warm up activities, then switched classes from yesterday. After lunch, we dove into "(I've Had The) Time of My Life". Lawrence taught the music to some soloists while Connie worked on some dancing with everyone else! At the end of the day, we started to put everyone together. We all worked hard and accomplished a lot! Above, you can see us hard at work learning the music. Below, we're getting our groove on!
Now that we're jumping into the second week of our adventure, the real rehearsal work must begin. We started the day with workshops led by our camp instructors: J.D. taught us a bit about music theatre history, Connie gave us an introduction to dance and movement, and Lawrence helped us jump into the world of music. After lunch, we worked hard on music and dance for a major number in the show, Kids in America. We also created a blog entry for Friday, but due to some internet problems our system experienced, we lost the entry to cyberspace... But check out some of our photos from Friday below! We spent most of the day outside, playing outdoor games--but later int he afternoon, we returned to the theater and had an air guitar competition!
Today we got to read through the show for the very first time! We discovered hilarious moments and watched the original music videos to all of our musical numbers. We also got to watch iconic movie scenes and commercials from the 1980s... The campers were in a bit of a culture shock. The staff and kids could not be more excited to tell this fun and hilarious story. Tomorrow is the elite air band competition!!! Come prepared in your 80s Rock star attire and bring clothes to change into in case of outdoor fun!
It is a complicated process, casting a show. There is so much more to consider than who to put in what role. Every member of the production team thinks about the skill set required in the show, the big picture, and has to decide who would fit in where to make the show the best it can be. It takes a lot of patience to go through the audition process and today we were really proud of all the campers.
The most fun part of tryouts is learning about people's hidden talents, as all directors like to know about any special skills the actors might have which could be of use in the show. As a result we were treated to some kickin' karate, jumpin' gymnastics, Irish dancing and level 6 yo-yo skills. Everyone kept their head on a swivel, even though auditions can be a grueling process. We are thankful for their work & talent, and will start tomorrow fresh as a newly birthed calf. We are so excited to start off our 5-week summer camp for the Back to the 80's Musical! From "Captain on Deck" to the zombie attack name game to "Freeze, Pose, Statue," we've done a lot of warm up games to get loose, get groovy, and get to know each other. We also learned about auditioning and general tips for standing out at an audition. Then we split off into groups to learn the dance moves, boys' and girls' songs, and lines to be performed for AUDITIONS TOMORROW! We are pumped to see what these talented young folks have to show for us!! Above: Counselor Dana teaching about cold reads, different characters, and what scenes the kids will read for tomorrow. Above: a super fun game of "Freeze, Pose, Statue" Above: enjoying some lunch and soakin' up some sunshine. Above: Counselors Lawrence and Kelsey teach a group the girls' song: "Let's Hear It for the Boy"
